4 LGBTQ female entrepreneurs changing the game
4 LGBTQ female entrepreneurs changing the game4 LGBTQ female entrepreneurs changing the gameTim Cook might be the first name that comes to mind when you think openly gay CEO. In fact, before Cook came out, tzu siche were no openly gay CEOs in the Fortune 500. But there are countless other women (and men) challenging the status quo of what it means to be an entrepreneur. We love the below women who have forged their own path. Created their own careers. And continue to fight for the rights of the LGBTQ community.Gigi GorgeousBeing inspired keeps up alive. And YouTube star Gigi Gorgeous, currently clocking 2.2 mio followers on the video platform and 2 million on Insta, is nothing short of inspiring. Born Gregory Lazzarato, the middle of three brothers, Gigi began sharing YouTube videos from her bedroom in Toronto in 2008. They were confessionals, makeup tutorials, and normal goofy videos with high school friends. At the time Gigi identified as a gay male, receiving support from both her parents. Her brothers appeared in videos alongside her as well. It was after losing her mother to cancer that Gigi posted a video officially identifying as transgender. That was December 2013.Shes spent almost a decade in front of the camera. She edits all her own videos. Shes taken acting classes and made a few moves in the world of cinema. As to who she wants to work with? Any major star would be amazing, she says. I really love acting. But shes also broken barriers, working with major brands like Pantene and Crest- what she calls pinch me moments. When I signed the deal for the Crest campaign for 3D White, I bawled my eyes out to my dad, but it shows what you put in, is what you get out.Being a transgender woman I know the hardships that the people in my community go through, she says. I think its important to get my story out there for the world to see. We saw this with Caitlyn Jenner and Laverne Cox theyre huge media icons but they made transgender a household topic and thats really powerful. It changes peoples perspective. For our full interview with Gigi click here.Ingrid NilsenIn the world of YouTube there are those considered to be top of their game. Beauty blogger Ingrid Nilsen is one such name. Her charm and smile are infectious. As is her honesty. In her coming out video titled, Something I Want You to Know, Ingrid told her subscribers the she was gay. The video has over 15 million views to date. Im gay, she tells the camera, laughing and crying, it feels so good to say that.Though it felt natural and important to her, it was also a big step in bringing my audience closer and letting them in. I didnt want to hide. I didnt want to shut them out.YouTube has been a space where people can be themselves, and be themselves in whatever light that is that day and receive acceptance, she says. I think thats why its why its so accepting of the LGBTQ community. Its rooted in authenticity and acceptance at its core. For our full interview with Ingrid click here. Nicolette MasonWe think its maybe a little too obvious about how much we fan girl over writer and influencer Nicolette Mason, but the sharp-witted bloggers is the real deal. I never thought working for a fashion magazine was ever in the realm of possibility for me, said blogger and writer Nicolette Mason. I had the education and the background, but there was no one who looked like me. No one I could look to as an example, she shared. When Vogue Italia reached out to me and asked if I would be a contributor and a year from that point Marie Claire asked me to come in as a columnist and I penned a column for five years it was so amazing and surreal to know that my voice did have the potential and ability to be part of the mainstream.Nicolette says, Its the job of content creators and media creators to reflect our real world. For mora on Diversity and Representation in Media click here.Rachel Berks, founder of OtherwildOtherwild Founder Rachel Berks didnt set out to open a boutique shop slash graphic konzeption studio (making her an official slashie), but when the graphic design world and a brief stint at William Morris designing presentations for fast food companies didnt align with the vision she had for her future, she shifted gears. Rejection letters to female engineers in 1919 show how far women have come
Rejection letters to female engineers in 1919 show how far women have comeRejection letters to female engineers in 1919 show how far women have comeWomen engineers often drop out of the field even before they graduate college - to the tune of 40% of female engineering majors dropping out of the industry - but the discouragements of today were once brutally direct rejections telling women in science that theyd never amount to anything. To honor its founding this month, the Society of Women Engineers released historic academic rejection letters U.S. women engineers got to show how far women engineers have come and how far they still need to go to be accepted.Soft rejection versus the hard kind is just as discouragingIn 1919, Lou Alta Melton and Hilda Counts wanted to test academicassumptions and make their own society of women engineers. That year, they sent letters to every engineering department they could find to find out their policies on women joining, and if any women had taken their classes. What the two hopeful engineering studentsgot were rejections from men in power that ranged from firmly dismissive to kindly dismissive. This type of stigmatization and dismissal persists to this day. Engineering remains a male-dominated field. Women are only 13% of the engineering workforce. Far too many aspiring female engineers never enter the job market.40% of women engineers quit the field or never use their degree. We do leid expect to have in the near future, any women studentsSome rejections read like a door firmly shut in ones face.Dear Madam, Thorndike Saville, a University of North Carolina professor, told Melton. We have not now, have never had, and do not expect to have in the near future, any women students registered in our engineering department.Other professors thought not enough women would be interested. You ask for information or suggestions. I have only this say, that I suspect the number of women who have undertaken general engineering courses is so f ew that you will hardly be able to form an organization, William Raymond, a dean at the State University of Iowa, wrotein his dismissal. But at least he noted that his was not the only opinion that mattered However, I may be mistaken, he concluded.Other academic officials recognized that times were changing, but they also recognized that they wouldnt be the pioneers unternehmensverbund the door open.Up to the present, women students have not been admitted to GA Tech. Yesterday, the City of Atlanta conferred suffrage on women in City Affairs, so no knowing what may happen J.S. Boon, a mechanical engineering professor told Melton. In other, words, best of luck, but youll get no help from me.The most positive response came from Helen Smith, a female engineering student at the University of Michigan who told Melton and Counts that the women there had formed their own society, T-Square, with the universitys approval.Smith said her and the rest of T-Square werepleased to hear from women stu dying the same things in Colorado. Smith ended up giving the two prospective students advice on how to start their own society, which never got off the ground. The story still has a good ending Melton and Counts, at least, persevered in spite of all the men telling them no.Melton became the only female graduate in her civil engineering class at the University of Colorado, and later went on to take an engineering job at the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads. Countsbecame the first women to graduate with an electrical engineering degree in Colorado, which she put to use in her job at theRural Electrification Administration. Thirty years later, Counts became one of the founding members of the Society of Women Engineers.

Australians are stressed and overworked
Australians are stressed and overworked Australians are stressed and overworkedPosted October 13, 2011, by Josie Chun Australians are stressed, overworked and reluctant to take holidays, according to the latest Australian Work Life Index (AWALI) report. The index measures how work affects quality of life for working Australians. The proportion of people dissatisfied with their worklife balance has increased over the last three years, with the majority of Australians reporting that work is negatively impacting on the rest of their lives, causing stress and less time for themselves, their family and friends. Normal 0 0 1 205 1172 9 2 1439 11.1282 0 0 0 One quarter of full-time working women and one fifth of full-time working men feel dissatisfied with their worklife balance, and two thirds of full-time women and half of full-time men frequently feel rushed and pressed for time. Seven out of 10 working mothers report almost always feeling rushed and under pressure. More tha n 20 per cent of Australian workers spend 50 hours or more a week at work and 60 per cent do not take regular holidays. Working longer hours leads to lower worklife scores, higher absenteeism and lower productivity. Those who work the longest hours include workers in construction and mining, health, education, retail, hospitality, and managerial and professional workers. Three-quarters of people working long hours say they would like to work fewer hours, even if that means less income, and most workers would take two extra weeks of holiday over a pay rise. Sixty per cent of workers stockpile their leave even though not taking a holiday is associated with lower worklife satisfaction. In most cases, work pressure is what prevents them from taking their holidays. Women in full-time work suffer worse worklife interference than their male counterparts, and working mothers are particularly hard hit as they attempt to juggle the demands of work and family. Poor worklife outcomes are a ssociated with poorer health, more use of prescription medications, more stress and more dissatisfaction with close personal relationships. For the sake of employees health, employers need to demonstrate more flexibility and develop worklife friendly practices. Managers and leaders also need to increase leave opportunities and encourage employees to take holidays, and set an example by taking leave themselves.
